In the second part of Chapter 3 we use intersection theoretic arguments, combined with arguments taken from Morse theory, to prove the Poincare duality theorem for differentiable manifolds. We discuss the solution theory of geometric wave equations as they arise in Lorentzian geometry: for a normally hyperbolic differential operator the existence and uniqueness properties of Green functions and Green operators is discussed. By the end of this book, I had an advanced exposure to foundational modern mathematics. The theory of plane and space curves and of surfaces in the three-dimensional Euclidean space formed the basis for its initial development in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. As usual, some of it is older than Euclid. But I don't know much in the way of great self-learning differential geometry texts, they're all rather quirky special-interest textbooks or undergraduate-level grab-bags of light topics.
