To adequately understand problems faced by an aging population, scholarly research not only requires findings (data) but also explanation (theory). Social gerontological research, though promising and significant, has often disinherited theory. This “data rich and theory poor” (Birren & Bengston, 1988) academic phenomena poses two problems: First, researchers have been too quick to connect empirical findings to established explanations of social phenomena, thereby running the risk of “reinventing the wheel”; (Bengston, et al. 1997); Second, since most studies fail to conceptualize a theory as to why and how programs are expected to work (Alley, et al. 2010; Hendricks, et al. 2010), gerontological research has limited ability to inform interventions to solve aging-related problems Generations Together: A Job-Training Curriculum for Older Workers in Child Care Generations Together: A Job-Training.
