Indeed it is these differences in the reflectance of surfaces which leads to differences in the visual contrast of objects illuminated by the same light sources whether that source is the sun, moon or an electric lamp. It is for this reason that luminance units are preferred when describing the visual problems which face an animal in the natural world. They can be compared directly with measures of the visual capacities of an animal. All objects in a given scene are illuminated by the same natural light sources (sun, moon, stars, sky) which are so far away that effectively all objects in a scene receive the same illumination.

Even species falling into the mainly nocturnal migration category were relatively rare (29% of passerines and 5% of non-passerines). However, equally nocturnal and diurnal migratory activity was commonly reported both among passerines and non-passerines, but nearly half of all passerines and two-thirds of all non-passerines are either diurnal or principally diurnal in their activity through these particular migratory watch points. Even so, 75% of the species have been recorded as a night migrant at some time.

In view of this, and the lack of published systematic lists of the nocturnal migratory behaviour of species passing through the British Isles, a simple survey was conducted. This survey collated data on the normal patterns of nocturnal and diurnal migratory behaviour through seven different bird observatories around the coast of the British Isles. Data were obtained by asking observers to record what they regarded as the normal pattern of nocturnal-diurnal migratory behaviour of the bird species which pass through each observatory.
