It was the networked combination of these four fields – gynaecology, physiology, biochemistry and pharmacy – that, Oudshoorn argues, produced hormones as we know them today. The combined activities of these fields led to the chemical isolation of female sex steroids from the urine of horses and pregnant women in 1929 and to the isolation of male sex hormones from men’s urine in 1931 (Oudshoorn 1994: 29). Initially, following the two-sex model, female sex hormones were thought to exist only in women (and indeed to cause femininity) and male sex hormones only in men.

It was also strongly related to an emphasis on women’s role in the domestic sphere: female skeletons were represented with hips suitable for childbearing, thus emphasising women’s ‘natural’ proclivity for motherhood.
